SHOULDN'T I BUY OR SELL THROUGH AUCTION?
In recent years auction houses have seduced an ever expanding private client base with thorough effectiveness and for his they deserve all the credit they get, but the following should be pointed out, with regards to a reputable dealer as a viable alternative;
Firstly, make no mistake, they are working for the vendor, and for this they charge upwards of 26% - it cannot be both "the cheapest place to buy" and "the best place to sell".
Secondly, auction houses sell what they are asked to - there is no selection process.
Thirdly, as a vendor, generally one has to rely on a potential sale at some time in the future and no guarantee of sale.
Furthermore when we started in business 90% of the buyers were trade and likewise 90% of the vendors were private, these figures, with intent, have almost been reversed, to the point that Sotheby's recently announced they are to launch a sale in January 2006 that will openly rely entirely on dealer's stock for its content.
As an alternative we will offer unbiased, informed advice, placing items with existing clients and charge a fraction of the cost ( generally on a transparent sliding scale typically ranging from 5 - 10% ) and when buying from our inventory you have the comfort of knowing we have over 50 years experience combined, and if I may say, a well earned reputation for honesty and integrity.
